PROFILE : Don Letts (REBEL DREAD HARDWARE)
Born in Brixton, London, he was a key figure in connecting punk and reggae.
His first club as a DJ, ROXY, was only open for 100 days, but became legendary for introducing the appeal of reggae to punks such as Sex Pistols, The Clash, and The Slits. Don Letts, who ran the shop Acme Attractions, which was a central presence in London culture alongside Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren's Sex, attracted attention for its fashion and dub reggae music that vibrated the shop walls with its deep bass.
He also works as a filmmaker, shooting footage of the time in real time and producing the first punk documentary, "PUNK ROCK MOVIE," in 1979. In 2003, he won a Grammy Award for his documentary on THE CLASH, "WESTWAY TO THE WORLD." In 2005, he produced "PUNK: ATTITUDE," which delves into the heart of punk.
In the mid-80s, THE CLASH He worked with former bandmate MICK JONES in "BIG AUDIO DYNAMITE," where he played a central role in the band's sound with his innovative use of samples. In addition to studio and remix work under the name DUB CARTEL SOUND SYSTEM, he participated as a selector in the globally beloved compilation series "Late Night Tales" in 2021, garnering praise for his unique dubbed-out selections. In 2023, he released his first album, "Outta Sync," under the name of his solo project, "REBEL DREAD." He also has his own show, "Culture Clash Radio," which airs every Sunday on BBC RADIO 6 Music.
This will be Don Letts' first visit to Japan in six years, and the tour will mark the launch of his closing project, REBEL DREAD HARDWARE, which he founded in 2023 with his 18-year-old friend Hatchuck and Don Letts.
